What is ChillerMag?

ChillerMag is a line of advanced magnetic filtration systems engineered to protect air and water-cooled chiller systems. Sludge, rust, and debris are silent efficiency killers in chiller systems. Over time, they can cause corrosion, reduce heat transfer efficiency, create blockages, and shorten the lifespan of the entire system, including the chiller itself.

ChillerMag is installed in the water flow path and is designed to stop those problems before they start. Using powerful magnetic filtration, it captures fine magnetic particles that traditional strainers miss due to their small size, protecting Fan Coil Units (FCUs), pumps, valves, and heat exchangers from damage.

  1. Corrosion and Oxidation:
      • Over time, metal components like pipes, pumps, and heat exchangers oxidize.
      • Magnetite forms in low-oxygen environments but is released when oxygen enters the system due to leaks or frequent water top-ups. Ensuring the system is properly sealed, fully degassed with an effective air vent/separator, and free of leaks is crucial.
  2. Magnetite Formation:
      • When oxygen and iron react inside the system, they form magnetite (Fe₃O₄) — a fine black sludge that’s magnetic.
      • Magnetite is especially common in closed-loop water systems
  3. Poor Water Treatment or Contaminants:
      • Inadequate filtration, untreated water, or dirty fill water can introduce minerals, biological growth, or debris, accelerating sludge buildup.
      • Maintaining a mildly alkaline pH in the system water, along with the use of BM1 Inhibitor, helps form a stable, protective layer on internal metal surfaces, reducing active corrosion
  • Reduces Heat Transfer Efficiency: Magnetite and sludge acts as an insulator, forming a layer on heat exchange surfaces, and inside the chiller and pipes, which significantly reduces the system’s ability to dissipate heat effectively.
  • Causes Blockages: Magnetite particles settle in pipes, valves, and heat exchangers, restricting or blocking water flow, which increases pump strain and energy consumption.
  • System Inefficiency: The overall system has to work harder and consume more energy to maintain the required temperature, leading to reduced efficiency and higher operating costs. 
  • Corrosion and Component Damage: The presence of magnetite can accelerate further corrosion, leading to pitting, leaks, and damage to critical components like pumps and valves, ultimately shortening their lifespan or leading to costly repairs.
  • Leads to Unplanned Downtime: Ultimately, sludge can shut down cooling systems, especially in critical facilities like hospitals or data centers.
